Ready, Set, Dodge: Martin School Fifth Graders Play Tournament for Charity

Four teams competed in the second annual Martin School Dodgeball Tournament to help out the fifth grade activity fund and a charity to be named later.

Donations were taken at the door on Wednesday at George R. Martin Elementary School in south Seekonk as family and friends gathered to watch the fifth graders play a dodgeball tournament. "We get some donations that can go to a good cause, but mostly it's about getting the kids out to do something in the middle of winter," said Principal Kevin Madden.

The donations will be split between the Martin fifth-grade activity fund and a charity to be named later. "The fifth graders have lots of field trips and things for the end of the year...and then we'll pick a charity to donate some of the money to," said Madden.

Last year the donations went to charitable efforts at Seekonk Human Services, such as helping to pay for heating for residents. This year, Madden speculated that the donations might go to the Humane Society, but said that a decision had not yet been made.

Either way, great fun was had by all in attendance at the fundraiser. Four teams of fifth graders took part in a double elimination tournament while over 100 parents, siblings and friends looked on. Afterwards, faculty competed in a game that was deemed "just for fun."

The students were extremely competitive in their tournament, and cheered more than enthusiastically for the faculty teams in later action. The Red team was victorious over the Green, Black and Blue teams in the student tournament.

Their dominance was nearly complete. They did lose one game when gym teacher Mrs. Swick called a controversial "jail break," sending all the eliminated players from the Blue team back onto the floor.
