Pirate Dumas Reads to Willett Elementary Mates

Willett Elementary students had a surprise visit from Mayor Kevin Dumas during the school's annual reading night.

There were Tinkerbells, pirates and even a Wendy at Friday night's annual kindergarten and first-grade Reading Night at Willett Elementary, sponsored by its Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

Volunteers decorated the gym with a Captain Hook/Peter Pan theme and kids were encouraged to dress in costume.

Mayor Kevin Dumas was a guest reader and held the children's attention.

"School Community events fosters connections between students and neighbors," Willett Principal Catherine Zinni said. "Sharing an evening of quality literature conveys the importance of reading together."

Along with listening to stories, students made made fairy wands and Peter Pan hats.  They enjoyed a feast of cookies and snacks of all kinds.

On display for the event was a cardboard and wood pirate ship, made by the Land family.

The highlight of the night was when Captain Hook told a secret to the students. After the children promised to keep his secret, he revealed the truth. Captain Hook took off his black wig and revealed that he is bald.  The children were giggling with laughter.

The annual event is held each spring as a way to encourage reading.
