Party Raises Money for Scholarship

The William Bergevine Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an Attleboro resident who has shown leadership and a commitment to community service.

Dancing, dinner and remembrance were on tap last weekend during an event at the Attleboro Elks Lodge to raise money for the William Bergevine Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established earlier this year to support local high school students who have demonstrated leadership while being active community members. It is named in memory of William Bergevine, who died last year and had served as a city councilor and school committee member.

"My father loved his community, and it was a source of great pride that he was a third-generation Attleboro resident," Bergevine's daughter Jennifer wrote in an email to Attleboro Patch. "He believed that it was a civic responsibility to give back to the community, which is what prompted him to join the Superintendent of Schools search in 1999 and launched him into public service. I can't imagine a more fitting way to honor my dad and keep his spirit alive than this scholarship."

Those interested in donating to the Bergevine scholarship fund can send a tax-deductible contribution in any amount to Attleboro Scholarship Foundation Inc., 89 North Main Street, P.O. Box 1666, Attleboro, MA 02703. Specify on the memo line of the check that the donation is for the William Bergevine Scholarship.
