Residents to See if Attleboro's Superintendent Makes the Mark

A change in Massachusetts' open meeting laws will make the school committee's evaluations of the superintendent more public.

Changes in the state's open meeting law made in July will change some aspects of the Attleboro School Committee’s superintendent evaluation process.

The main change will be the making the committee members’ individual evaluation reports public documents.

In the past, the individual reports were not public, but a final compilation of the reports was made public.

Additionally, current Superintendent Pia Durkin’s contract requires the use of a specific evaluation method, which also includes a numerical evaluation that will now be made public where it previously was not.

The school committee’s legal advisor, Ed Lenox also recommended that the committee members’ names be on the individual reports.

“I think that would be fair,” Lenox said.

According to Lenox, the making public of these evaluations is required whenever a government body evaluates someone they employ, in this case the superintendent. This would not include the making public of teacher, principal or administration staff evaluations as those positions are not directly hired or evaluated by the school committee.

The committee expects to have their evaluations ready for the June 20 school committee meeting.
