Meeting Scheduled to Address Residency Issue

The Election Commission will meet Thursday at City Hall.

A notice was posted at on Tuesday for an Election Commission meeting with just three items on the agenda—roll call, "other business that may come forward" and a school district parent's allegation that School Committee member David Murphy was not an Attleboro resident when he was elected last fall.

District parent Jennifer Crowder . A previous complaint because it did not include all the features required for consideration.

Crowder has alleged that Murphy was a resident of Boston when he was elected. Murphy says he rented an apartment in Boston, but maintains a permanent address in Attleboro.

The meeting will take place at City Hall's Annex Conference Room, which is located on the first floor next to the council chambers. It is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

The Common Sense July 18, 2012 at 01:16 AM
Seriously now. Let me think this through. One SC member attends about 30% of all meetings and basically admits to living in Florida. Yet these clowns - Crowder and her cronies like Furtado - are going after a SC member who is there all the time. Just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean it has to get personal. If you were my child I would take away your snack.
Makes More Sense July 18, 2012 at 03:15 AM
I think Crowder deserves a snack. Murphy should prove his residency. He had an apartment in Boston, yet claims he lives with his parents. He moved out and got his own place, this is his residence. As for the other SC member, she pays taxes here and owns a home here. Murphy pays taxes in Boston. He lives in Boston. It isn't always about showing your face on camera. The other SC member who has a summer place in Florida makes decisions, does her homework and does her job. This issue has nothing to due with the other SC member. Did you ever stop and think that this is a resident expecting more from her committee members and the school system. I am so tired of hearing that other SC members are to blame or lets switch the focus on someone else. Mr. Murphy has caused all this turmoil himself and he is the only who should have his snack taken away. He should just step down from SC and show some respect for our community. If he believes in Attleboro and wants what is best, he will admit that he lives and Boston and give this respect to the people who actually live here.
Prove It July 18, 2012 at 03:22 AM
It's funny how everybody links Furtado to being the mastermind behind Crowder. This to me is just Murphy's attempt to discredit a school committee member who does not agree with him and won't bow down to his lawyer title. Furtado doesn't need anyone to be her crony. If you watch the school committee meetings, she can defend herself and can back up her decisions with facts. She comes to meetings prepared and does not have to lower herself to negative comments in the media like Murphy. You can try to redirect the focus off Murphy and put it on Furtado or even Enegren, but the public is wise. Murphy needs to take full responsibility for himself and stop having his supporters post against other hard working, Attleboro residents who are on the committee. If you do not agree with Murphy, I guess you are either conspiring against his residency or are not a resident of Attleboro yourself. What a sad state Murphy is in, it is all catching up with him. To many lies to keep straight.

Murphy has been to deceitful to the city. This cannot be tolerated. This article says that Crowder filed this complaint on Monday and the hearing is on Thursday. How can the commission investigate things in this short time? It doesn't sound like Crowder is going to get a fair shake. It is sad when our own local politics are based on connections and who knows who....Mr. Levinson is a good friend of Murphy's and had to step down from the commission. Mr. Levison made the commission aware of Murphy and how he is a good friend. Connections go along way. Crowder has laid out enough evidence and it is the commissions duty to follow up on this. If they dismiss this evidence, they should be dismissed for not doing their job and following up on what Crowder has found.

When he filed his running papers, he listed three addresses. Did anyone at the election commission review and approve his application? His residency was brought into question at the time of the elections, yet his name made the ballot. It was all over the news at the time. He was confident that he had met the residency requirements. His name was put on the ballot. He was elected to an At-Large position - the entire voting population of the city had an input on whether they thought there was a legitimate concern. Yet, he was voted in. At this point all this is going to do is cost us more money that our tight budget does not have. If he is proven to not have been eligible, its the entire election system in place that failed the city, not just Mr. Murphy. If we like to think that we elect honest, hard working people with integrity to these positions, then Mr. Murphy should be afforded the consideration that he did not run and get elected with a malicious intent.

So when it becomes public that Furtado and Crowder are related, what say you then? When it is documented that Murphy IS AND WAS a resident, what then? Are you and yours going to post apologies? The Patch and all of these posts are nothing more than a PR campaign to smear people. You did it to the business manager, and STILL can't explain what the "sweetheart deal" was (because there wasn't one); you continue to do it to the Superintendent, Mr. Murphy and anyone else working for the betterment of our schools and students. Talk about lies.....as I keep saying there is not one shred of fact in ANYTHING said here about Mr. Murphy's residency and there will not be any fact supporting anything claimed here or in that atrocious document put together by the Jim, Teri, Brenda, Barbara, Crowder group. Sadly you have again achieved your objective; the outcome of the hearing doesn't really matter.

@Tim Silva, are you kidding me? If course he IS and WAS a resident. He WAS a resident when he grew up here. He IS a resident because he received so much negative press for the Boston apartment that he dropped it and kicked it away like a hot potato. Problem is he wasn't a resident here WHEN HE WON THE SC SEAT. And for all we know he is still paying taxes to Boston and I bet if we looked at the license he's been carrying around during his tenure as a SC member it would say Boston as his city. Though for all we know he had his license info changed recently to avoid telling the truth.

@Tim Silva As for the Crowder/Furtado relation thing- now you’re just being preposterous and rude. Of course they are not related. Since when did it “come out” that Brenda Furtado and Barbara Craw were related? BARBARA SAID IT THE ENTIRE CAMPAIGN, she wanted to be completely transparent about it. She made no secret of it. Just because you didn’t pay attention to what was being said, don’t turn around and make it sound like she never said it. Barbara stated from the beginning that regardless of Brenda she would have ran because she felt there were changes that needed to be made and she wanted to stand up for her son Ben’s rights. They aren’t robot twins, they are two different people who have different experiences and concerns. They might often share the same concerns because they are standing up for people who have come to them with their problems because…wait for it…those are their constitutes and that’s who they feel they have loyalty to and have to answer to. Because they remember why they were elected and who put them in that seat. I’m sick of listening to people say “the sisters”- why is it when two women agree on something because it’s the right thing to do and happen to be related its suddenly a conspiracy and they duped residents into something but if they weren’t related it would be different?
Tim Silva July 18, 2012 at 03:26 PM
@Briana Perhaps brush up on your reading skills.....Crowder is NOT Barbara.....they are two different people. Maybe also review what "Prove it" wrote to understand better......
Ken Tenglin July 18, 2012 at 03:30 PM
The common sense, Makes more sense and Prove it. If you can't put your own name on it, it doesn't mean much to the rest of us. This is a waste of time and money! Dismiss this thing and get on with solving the problems at hand, there seems to be enough of them to keep the school committee busy.
Briana Auclair July 18, 2012 at 03:37 PM
I'm very aware that Jennifer Crowder and Barbara Craw are different people. But making comments and insinuating that since Jennifer Crowder and Brenda Furtado have similar opinions they must be related just like Brenda and Barbara are, is rude, false and unnecessary.
Tim Silva July 18, 2012 at 03:58 PM
The connection is biological and has nothing to do with opinion
Briana Auclair July 18, 2012 at 04:06 PM
...Jennifer Crowder is not related to Brenda Furtado. At all. There is no biological link between them. Where are you getting your information? National Enquirer?
Gretchen Robinson July 18, 2012 at 06:18 PM
I am baffled why David Murphy's presence on the SC would prompt such a vendetta!! Come on folks isn't there anything better to fight about? An earlier posting on this topic complained about David Murphy not being a parent. What an idiotic reason to think a person doesn't belong on the SC. Or, how about sharing info and conversing rather than 'fight' about every little thing that comes along.
Christine Viveiros July 18, 2012 at 07:06 PM
I have to admit I was a little skeptical of this residency thing when it was brought up but all you nay' sayers out there calling for Mr Murphy to fess up and step down, do yourself a favor and contact HIM. With the exception of him being on the SC, I don't know him from a hole in the wall, but I took it upon myself to email him. I got a response within an hour. Some of you probably wouldn't contact him for fear of uncovering YOUR identity. If you want questions answered, ask HIM instead of asking the Patch.
D Sanderson July 18, 2012 at 08:24 PM
Murphy's supporters are pulling at straws because he is not a resident. Saying that Furtado and Crowder are related now, what a despearate ploy. I do not see why Gretchen calls this a vendetta. Crowder has been questioning Murphy's residency since he ran for office. She said she filed a complaint with the ethics board, but she had to wait till he was elected to do anything about it. So stop trying to spread false rumors that another school committee member is doing this as a vendetta. Your petty attempts to take the heat of Murphy will not work. He has been deceitful and the public now knows it. He is an attorney and knows what being a resident means. The dumb act he is playing is not fooling me. Furtado has no relation to Crowder. Again, just someone trying to put false rumors out there to take the focus off Murphy. Murphy is the one who has the vendetta, that is why he runs to the press everytime a member disagrees with his opinnion. He wants to make them look bad so he can look like a heroe. Too many people are wise to this Murphy. This has nothing to do with any other school committee member. This has to do with his own audacity and thinking that he is smarter than the average voter and he can talk his way out of anything. He has all his friends posting on his behalf attacking other school committee members to try to make him look good. It is not working!!!!!

It's just my opinion but doing something illegal to catch someone else doing something illegal seems kind of hypocritical to me. I guess some people still believe that the end justifies the means.
Ronda "Roni" Lodge July 20, 2012 at 11:23 PM
Who did something illegal. Just because the Complainant asked for information and was given it? That makes it illegal?
Adam Edward July 21, 2012 at 11:39 AM
If I walked into the RMV today and asked for your address I'm pretty sure they would not just give it to me and if they did wouldn't that be illegal? wouldn't you have a problem with that? I have no problem with challenging government everyone should make them accountable. If the complaintant didn't do anything illegal to obtain this information that is fine with me. What if she got this information illegally though?
