Martin School Students Donate Boxes of Food to Needy

Martin Elementary School students have worked together to collect canned goods and money to donate to Doorways, the local food bank.

Tomorrow morning students from will drop off 357 cans, boxes and bags of cereal, pasta, rice and other foods to the Doorways food bank.

Ann Marie Braganca’s second-grade class has collected the food while also working the project into their math lessons. The students have counted the donations and the number of items in different categories, such as pasta or vegetables. Then they have been learning to make graphs representing their donations.

“It was hard at first,” said second-grader Emma of the graphing lessons.

In additional to learning math, students have learned that there are many people less fortunate than themselves and that they should do their best to help them.

“We did this because we wanted to help people,” said second-grader Brady.

“We collected this for Doorways so that they could give to people in need,” said second-grader Juliano.

Cameron, a second-grader from a different class, went so far as to ask friends and family to give him donations of food in lieu of presents for his birthday.

“I get lots of presents for my birthday and for Christmas. I’m very thankful, but it’s not just me who needs things,” said Cameron.

Braganca’s class was not alone in their food drive, as she said the school’s principal, Bart Lush, was very helpful and supportive of the project, and Mary Emmett also assisted the class with the counting and organization of the donations.

The fifth-grade student council also lent a hand by collecting the cash donations as well as collecting the 25 cents Martin students paid to have a schoolwide “hat day," where students were allowed to wear any hat they wanted throughout the day.

“The whole school was involved,” said Braganca.
