Local 7th Grader Takes Home Spelling Title

Anneka Ignatious, a seventh-grade student from Wrentham at Dayspring Christian Academy of Attleboro, took first place in the Spelling Bee of the Eastern Massachusetts/Rhode Island District of the Association of Christian Schools International

Anneka Ignatious, a seventh-grade student at Dayspring Christian Academy of Attleboro, placed first among all contestants recently in the Spelling Bee of the Eastern Massachusetts/Rhode Island District of the Association of Christian Schools International hosted by Parkside Christian Academy of Boston.

According to DCA Faculty Advisor Ronda Bootland, the competition in Boston featured students in Grades 5 through 8 who are attending ACSI-affiliated schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. After capturing the Grade 7 contest, Ignatious concluded first among the eight finalists – two from each grade – in the competition.

This year marks the fourth successive year in which a DCA student claimed top honors in the District Spelling Bee. Thanks to the efforts of Ignatious and her nine teammates, DCA also clinched the team championship of the competition.

“I’m very proud of all our students who competed because they studied hard for the past six weeks in after-school sessions to prepare for the Spelling Bee,” Bootland said. “I think they all did an amazing job.”

By virtue of her victory, Ignatious will advance to the ACSI’s Northeast District Spelling Bee which will be held in February 2013 in Lancaster, Penn. Regional champions and high-finishers will earn berths in the ACSI’s National Spelling Bee to be held in May 2013 in Dallas, Texas.
