Attleboro Students Recognized at Awards Night

The top students receive honors during a ceremony at Attleboro High School.

The top students in academics, arts, community service and athletics were recognized Thursday at Attleboro High School's annual Awards Night. The event included the revealing of Emily Mayer as the valedictorian for the Class of 2012 and Brian Cox as the salutatorian.

Mayer maintained a grade point average of 104.2. She will attend NYU Business School in the fall. Cox's GPA was 102.4. He will attend Northwestern University. The two students will be further honored at a special ceremony in the Principal's Lobby on May 25 at 1 p.m. 

Mayer and Cox were recognized multiple times at the awards night, with both students receiving Achievement in Mathematics. Mayer also earned the Daughters of the American Revolution's Good Citizen of Attleboro High School recognition for "having demonstrated the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism" as well as the O’Hare Sportsmanship and Harry E. Cooper Biology awards. Cox was one of three students named Community Service Learning Program Volunteer of the Year.

BOOK AWARDS (presented to members of Class of 2013, descriptions provided by Attleboro High)

Bay Path College Book Award, Allison Standley. The focus at Bay Path is on preparing students to become professionals and leaders in their fields through a dynamic curriculum guided by our core values. The award is given annually to a select group of elite high school students from New England and New York. 

Colby College Book Prize, Abigail Oliver. The award goes to a student who has shown outstanding academic achievement in the school's most rigorous curriculum and has made substantial contributions to the high school and local community. Also, the prize is awarded to a person who has initiative, integrity, social maturity and genuine concern for others. Sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Bradford S. Germain.                        

Elmira College Key Award, Tania Barzola-Amante. The award goes to a student who demonstrates both academic achievement and outstanding school and community leadership. The winner is eligible for a four-year, $48,000 scholarship.

Harvard Prize Book Award, Mahrukh Malik. The award goes to a student who displays excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields. The winner of this award, through their intelligence and variety of achievement, exemplifies Harvard's concern for excellence. Sponsored by Mr. James H. Anderson, Class of 1969    

Lemoyne College Heights Award, Jonathan Giara. The award recognizes a student who is "reaching for the heights" in the classroom and in service to the school and community. It is intended to promote and recognize academic achievement, service and leadership.      

Rensselaer Medal, Morgan Martini. The award honors a student who has achieved excellence in an exceptional mathematics and science program. The recipient has demonstrated the potential for success in a science or technology-oriented profession. Each medalist who is accepter and subsequently enrolls at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute receives a four-year, $60,000 scholarship.                        

Saint Michael's College Book Award, Diana Lam and Ryan Papgiris. The award recognizes students who exhibit the characteristics of an ideal Saint Michael's student, based specifically on achievement in academics and community service.   

Society of Women Engineers Certificate of Merit, Christina Lam. The award is offered to a young woman who has demonstrated high achievement in science and mathematics. Award recipients must have completed three years of science and three years of mathematics with distinction and must be students who have been active citizens of the school and/or community.

Student Sage Scholarship Nomination Program at Russell Sage College, Megan Greve and Joseph Kelley. This program allows schools to nominate a female student who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement. If selected, the student nominee will be eligible for a scholarship at Russell Sage College.

Wellesley College Book Award, Julia Bergh. The award honors a female student whose academic record and character are exceptional and who has also made significant personal contributions to her school and/or the local community.
