Attleboro School's Half-Day Kindergarten Schedule in Violation of State Law

The Attleboro School Commitee voted to make changes to the Kindergarten schedule to be in compliance with state law.

The Attleboro School Committee resolved an issue regarding the scheduling of the morning and afternoon kindergarten classes during its meeting Monday night.

While discussing the proposed calendar for the next school year it was pointed out by Attleboro School Committee Member James Stors that, given the way half days are scheduled, the afternoon kindergarten classes were ultimately being taught for fewer hours than the morning classes and  that meant the district was in violation of Massachusetts regulations.

Section 603, 27.03 (5) of the Code of Massachusetts’s Regulations requires that “In those school districts which schedule two sessions of kindergarten daily, the school committee shall adopt a schedule for its kindergarten programs which ensures equal instructional time for all kindergarten students.”

The Attleboro School's Director for Teaching and Learning Excellence, Nancy Sprague, offered a solution to the issue. Sprague suggested taking two school days, when there is no morning or afternoon kindergarten and make them days where only the afternoon class would meet. To be in compliance, the morning kindergarten class will now have to end two days earlier than afternoon kindergarten classes.
