Attleboro Girls Bested by Taunton

The loss drops the Bombardiers' record to 7-3.

Taunton High School's girls basketball team came away from Attleboro's home court Friday with a 45-38 victory. Angie Martinez, Taunton's 6-foot, 2-inch post player, proved to be a constant threat at both ends (15 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocked shots).

The Tigers opened the scoring with a shot from behind the arc, but Attleboro's Kim Runey countered with her own 3. With 6.5 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter the score was tied. Attleboro's Emily Houle grabbed the rebound from Taunton's desperation shot and the first eight minutes of play ended 10-10.

Taunton hit the first bucket at the beginning of the second segment and Attleboro's Beth Clifton tied the score at 12 all. Following an Attleboro time out, Clifton hit a second shot to bring Attleboro's lead to 14-12. A basket by Houle and a free throw by Kerri Beland gave Attleboro a 17-12 lead. Taunton cut that lead to two with a successful three-point shot at the buzzer. Attleboro went into the locker room with  a 17-15 lead.

In the third quarter, the lead changed hands several times, with Taunton ahead 25-24 as the buzzer sounded to end that eight minute segment.

It was in the final quarter that freshman Houle went to work. She hit for two, bringing Attleboro within two. Bri LaPlume was successful from the free throw line and tied the score at 28-28. Taunton scored from three point range, taking the lead. Houle hit again, followed by a Kirsten Terrien basket. Houle tied the score 36-36 with two successful shots from the charity stripe.

With time running out Taunton took the lead and Attleboro was forced to foul, putting the orange and black on the free throw line.

Houle led the Bombardiers with 12 points and 14 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Clifton, once again, played hard inside and came away with eight points.

The Bombardiers' record dropped to 7-3. They will travel to Foxboro on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. contest.

Attleboro's junior varsity team was successful, besting Taunton 34-29. Scoring for the Bombardiers were Olivia Letourneau, 7 points, and Najaie Silva and Melissa Sheehan with 6 points each.

The AHS Freshman suffered a 44-37 loss, with Rose Davies leading the Bombardier scoring with 17 points.
