The Attleboro High School girls basketball team earned another victory and this time, from the free throw line. The Bombardiers came away with a 52-41 victory over Dartmouth on Thursday at home.
Beth Clifton opened up the scoring at 7:01 of the first quarter and Attleboro never trailed. In the first eight-minute segment, the teams traded baskets and Attleboro led 15-14 going into the second quarter. The girls in blue tightened up their defense and held Dartmouth to just five points in the second period, taking a 25-19 lead at the break.
Attleboro came out strong in the third quarter, scoring the first four points and taking a 10-point lead into the final eight minutes of play. In the final quarter, Dartmouth began to chip away at the Attleboro lead and came within three points of knotting the score. Then sophomore Kerri Beland took command. With the ball in Beland's hands and time running out, Dartmouth was forced to foul. Beland hit six in a row from the line to secure the victory for Attleboro. She went 11 for 11 from the charity stripe (20 points).
Bri LaPlume contributed nine points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Beth Clifton chipped in with eight points despite getting into early foul trouble. Sophomore Emily Houle was once again a force under the basket, corralling 10 rebounds. The Bombardiers 23 for 28 free throw shooting was a major factor in the victory.
The win improved the record for the girls in blue to 5-2. They entertained Canton Friday (look for the recap of that game soon).
The Bombardier freshman and JV teams both fell at the hands of Dartmouth 26-20 and 31-18, respectively.
