Attleboro Bests Mansfield in Close Contest

The Blue Bombardiers improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Attleboro High girls varsity basketball team played at familiar surroundings Tuesday night when the Blue Bombardiers returned to their hard court after three games on the road. The girls in blue came away with a hard-fought 47-45 victory over the Hornets of Mansfield, improving their record this season to 3-1.  

Kerri Beland opened up the scoring at 6:55 of the first quarter with a three and the lead see-sawed back and forth during the opening stanza. Mansfield held a five-point lead as the quarter was about to end, but Kim Runey hit a buzzer-beater three to cut the Hornets lead to 14-12.

At 6:19 of the  second quarter, the Bombardiers tied the score at 16-16 and took a 21-19 halftime lead into the locker room.

The second half the girls in blue came out on the court and played a more physical game.  The lead continued to change throughout the third quarter and at the end of that 8 minute segment the score stood at 32-32.

At 2:53 of the final quarter Mansfield led, 44-40.  Bri Laplume scored from inside, was fouled and made good on her free throw, cutting the Mansfield lead to 1.  Beth Clifton missed on the front end of a 1 and 1 but Kim Runey found the range and put Attleboro ahead, 45-44.  Kirsten Terrien hit the second of two from the line, giving the Bombardiers a 46-44 lead.

With 22.6 ticks left on the clock Attleboro fouled on a Mansfield drive to the hoop, resulting in the AHS lead being cut to 46-45.  With the ball in her hands sophomore Kerri Beland was fouled and hit on one of her two free throws.  With a 2 point Attleboro lead, 8.1 seconds remaining in the game and the ball in the hands of Mansfield, the Bombardiers dug in and Kerri Beland grabbed a loose ball rebound and ran out the clock, securing an Attleboro victory!

Beth Clifton led Attleboro scoring with 12 points, shooting 6-7 from two point range.  Kerri Beland contributed 10 points and 9 rebounds. Kim Runey's 9 points, Bri LaPlume's 8 points and 8 rebounds and Kirsten Terrien's 8 points provided balanced scoring for the Lady Bombardiers. Terrien's 8 points came in the final minutes of the game.

Attleboro was without Senior Captain Bri Hochwarter, who was sidelined with a knee injury.

On Friday Attleboro travels to North Attleboro, for another Hockomock League encounter.

The AHS freshman lost to Mansfield, 36-21, as did the JV team, 50-31
