Accounting Error Could Affect Teacher Hirings

The Attleboro school district's finance head says he underestimated how much money the city will need to spend in the 2012-13 fiscal year.

The Attleboro school district will have fewer city dollars to spend than previously thought, interim Business Manager David King revealed on Wednesday.

The Sun Chronicle reported King told the School Committee's finance subcommittee that he had underestimated how much the city will need to spend by about $900,000. This happened because he thought the salaries of some employees were covered by the state, when the money actually comes from the city. The consequence is that the district might have to adjust its plan to hire 22 new teachers.

"We would have definitely wanted to hire more, but we are about half of what we intended to hire," Superintendent Pia Durkin told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

Durkin told the radio station that this will not affect other positive features of the proposed budget, including that there are not expected to be any layoffs for the first time in several years and that full-day kindergarten could be offered for all students.

A hearing on the proposed budget will take place Monday at 6:30 p.m. at . Attleboro-Seekonk Patch will post the proposed budget on this website prior to the hearing.
