2012 Seekonk High Grad May Run for School Committee

Less than a year after he received his diploma from Seekonk High School, Evan Berwick may be looking to return to the school district as an elected leader. The 2012 Seekonk High alumnus recently pulled papers for a potential run in the April school committee election for two seats. 

If he were to win a seat, Berwick would become one of the youngest elected officials in Massachusetts and follow in the footsteps of School Committee Chair Mitch Vieira. He was first elected in 2009, a little less than two years after graduating from Seekonk High.

Berwick attends the New England Institute of Technology in East Greenwich, R.I., according to his profile on Facebook. He did not respond to Seekonk Patch's email request for an interview.

It could be a crowded field in school committee campaign. Six others have also pulled papers. Former Selectman and Veterans Agent Don Kinniburgh has returned the papers and is officially in the contest, as is local talk show host Jeffrey Starr Mararian and political newcomer Bill Woods. Former Selectman Bob Richardson returned his papers Tuesday, and is waiting for the signatures from at least 50 residents to be verified by the Town Clerk's Office.

Former School Committee member Shane Halajko and newcomer Kyle Rose have also pulled papers. The deadline to return them is Feb. 11.

The seats being contested are occupied by David Mullen and David Abbott, who were appointed last month to fill vacancies made by the resignations of Fran Creamer and David Quinn. Both men said they would not run in the election.
