Three Vie for Seekonk Selectman Seat

The winner of the Sept. 24 election will fill the seat Bill Rice vacated in June.

There has been an empty seat on the five-member Seekonk Board of Selectmen since . Voters will determine who will fill the seat in a special election on Sept. 24.

There are three candidates—, and Jeffrey Starr Mararian. Only the names of Buckley and Almeida will appear on the ballot because they submitted petitions with at least 50 signatures to the town clerk's office by the deadline on Monday. Mararian, who hosts a local talk show, did not attempt to collect signatures, but notified the town clerk he would run as a write-in candidate.

Buckley, 47, and Almeida, 34, have run in previous selectmen campaigns. Almeida placed third of five . Buckley placed fifth of six in a race for two seats 10 years ago.

Seekonk's most recent special selectmen election took place in August 2008, with Francis Cavaco defeating former Selectman David Viera. The election followed the resignation of Carol Bragg. Like Rice, Bragg did not disclose why she stepped down.

The deadline to register to vote for this election is Sept. 4. If you also want to vote in the Sept. 6 state primary, you must register by Aug. 17.
