Synthetic Marijuana Now Illegal in Attleboro

The Attleboro City Council unanimously approved the measure, banning certain chemicals still legal under state and federal law.

City Councilors this week banned the use of "synthetic cannabinoids, synthetic stimulants and synthetic psychedelic hallucinogens" in the city of Attleboro.

In other words, synthetic marijuana, in all known forms, is now illegal in the city. Some agents now banned in Attleboro are still legal under state and federal law.

The measure banning the designer drug passed 11-0 Tuesday night. City Councilor Mark Cooper advocated for its passage.

Banned under the law, which went into affect when it was passed, included a large list of chemicals, known as cannabimimetic agents, that could be used to create the drug.

Cooper said Attleboro police officers, who advocated for the regulation, told him children as young as sixth graders were easily obtaining the drug for recreational purposes.

"I think we're taking great steps under your leadership," councilor Brian Kirby said to Cooper.

The new law gives enforcement to the Attleboro Police Department. Violators will be subject to a $300 fine.
