Seekonk Selectmen Vote to Put Senior Center on April Ballot

The Seekonk Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to include the senior center proposal on the April ballot.

The Seekonk Board of Selectmen unanimously voted 3-0 Wednesday in favor of putting the senior center debt exclusion question on the April election ballot.

The vote would allow a debt exclusion, used to override the state's tax-limiting law, Proposition 2 1/2, to come up with the $2.5 million needed for the cost of the design, construction, equipping and furnishing of the facility.

The 20-year bond would cost $8.05 per $100,000 in taxes in the first year.

The $2.5 million is an estimation of the cost according to Senior Center Building Committee chairman Dave Bowden.

“We cannot technically get bids until it gets funded” Bowden said.

The proposed 9,200 square foot facility will build on the land near and the Seekonk Animal Shelter.

If the debt exclusion question passes, the proposal would then come to the June Town Hall Meeting to be voted on by residents. The selectmen had a proposed special Town Hall Meeting that would have taken place this month.

If both pass, the Senior Center Building Committee is hoping for a late summer or early fall groundbreaking on the project.
