Vote on New Seekonk Senior Center Must Wait Until Spring

Voters were forced to postpone a decision on whether to build a new senior center in Seekonk.

Seekonk residents expecting to vote on a key step toward building a new senior center left Monday night’s Fall Town Meeting disappointed, as the vote had to be postponed indefinitely.

According to Selectman Francis Cavaco, the state said the town is not allowed to have the article on the Fall Town Meeting Warrant, only on the Spring Town Meeting Warrant.

The question of whether to spend $2.5 million to design, build and equip a new Human Service/Senior Center must begin with voter approval on a townwide ballot. The selectmen said the ballot question on the senior center must occur first, and then the money would be voted on in the Town Meeting in June.

Selectman Dave Parker said while this is the opposite of the order they usually follow, everyone will still have their voices heard on this matter.

“They have the last word,” said Parker of the Town Meeting voters.
