Lawmakers have scheduled a hearing on the bill for Feb. 5.

The largest immigrant advocacy group in New England is again pushing lawmakers to support a bill that would allow foreign-born residents living in the country illegally to secure Massachusetts driver's licenses, reported the Boston Herald.

Massachusetts law currently requires immigrants seeking a driver's license to prove they are in America legally.

The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, said removing that barrier — as proposed under the Safe Driving Bill — would make Massachusetts roads more secure ensuring immigrants living in the country illegally are trained, licensed and insured.

Supporters say the bill would particularly help people who do not live near public transportation. It also would protect the health and well-being of children who depend on their parents in medical emergencies.

Lawmakers have scheduled a hearing on the bill for Feb. 5.

The petition was signed by nearly 1,800 supporters by Saturday.

The petition features Valdirene Oliveira, an undocumented Brazilian, who has struggled to adequately care for her daughter who suffers from Spina Bifida, most acutely because she lacks a license to drive.

Why should a government entity reward law-breakers with a 'blessing' from government, a driver's license? What about the obligation to uphold the law, all the law?

Should'nt be allowed, we have way to many problems now. Time to hit the brakes!

let them get a license, pass the test, learn the vehicle law, not have to drive to work like criminals. They're here, they want to work -- and do -- and pay more in taxes for the work they do. I wish you over-entitled, self-justifying white males would just get over yourselves!! Even Mitt Romney in is enclave in Belmont employed undocumented workers to do his lawn.

Gretchen, Mercy, do you present a multitude of FALSE statements or claims here! America cannot allow every person in the world into this country. America IS generous in its immigration policy. What you neglect to mention is those who try to follow our law and apply legally are being pushed aside and treated shabbily versus those who BREAK THE LAW and enter ILLegally. What is it about "illegal" that you do not comprehend? We cannot uphold some law and not other law: that's tyranny. Romney hired a contractor to do some landscaping work at his Belmont house. He didn't know that said contractor had one or two folks who were not eligible; and when Mitt found out, he condemned it. Finally, Gretchen, it IS genuinely OFFENSIVE for you to write incendiary phrases like, "over-entitled, self-justifying, white males . .". It is no more legitimate for you to write that about a sub-group than any other sub-group, be they women, Hispanic, Black, or whatever. You need to get rid of your "television-mentality" that only resonates in far-Leftist towns like Cambridge. IF you truly want peace among all of us, you will cease and desist from freely demeaning a given group . . for which certain hypocrites take potshots at. If you wish to avoid being considered such, then stop attacking me for being a while male----two characteristics of my birth, and thus should, to be consistent, abandoned. There is nothing wrong with being a while male: as a matter of fact, I'm proud of it . . even though I did not choose to be such. Oh, BTW, I'm 1/32nd "Native American" from a great-great-great grandmother ancestor who was total Narragansett Indian. But even if I was not, you are plainly "out-of-line" to write such offensive speech! Try describing some other ethnic or gender group in such nefarious terms, and see the reaction. Said speech doesn't bother ME, per se; but your hypocrisy most surely does. Even your husband, Bill, could fall into such a category, right? It's past time for this garbage to cease----and it won't until we white males or our surrogates call you on the carpet for it! Get it??? Let's have the SAME standards for everyone; and THAT will promote peace more than many things. Peace to those who genuinely want peace.
