Neighbors Rip Attleboro Strip Mall Proposal

Those living near the proposed development on Route 1 off May Street say it will cause more traffic and the construction will be a disturbance.

The third time might not be the charm for a Rhode Island developer looking to build a strip mall in Attleboro on Route 1 off May Street. The property owner was met with stiff opposition from neighbors at a public hearing Tuesday night on the third proposal in five years to build on the property currently populated by trees.

The new proposal from Johnston-based Carpionato Properties calls for a 32,000-square-foot mall with three tenants. Responding to previous concerns by neighbors, only emergency vehicles would be able to enter the property from May Street with the use of a key. Trees and a fence would mask the commercial site from the residents.

These concessions this did not satisfy several neighbors, who addressed the council about their concerns, including traffic. They challenged the analysis from Carpionato's traffic consultant that the impact would be minimal since the mall would attract people who were already passing through the area.
