Neighbors Rip Attleboro Strip Mall Proposal

Those living near the proposed development on Route 1 off May Street say it will cause more traffic and the construction will be a disturbance.

The third time might not be the charm for a Rhode Island developer looking to build a strip mall in Attleboro on Route 1 off May Street. The property owner was met with stiff opposition from neighbors at a public hearing Tuesday night on the third proposal in five years to build on the property currently populated by trees.

The new proposal from Johnston-based Carpionato Properties calls for a 32,000-square-foot mall with three tenants. Responding to previous concerns by neighbors, only emergency vehicles would be able to enter the property from May Street with the use of a key. Trees and a fence would mask the commercial site from the residents.

These concessions this did not satisfy several neighbors, who addressed the council about their concerns, including traffic. They challenged the analysis from Carpionato's traffic consultant that the impact would be minimal since the mall would attract people who were already passing through the area.

The developer is seeking a zoning change that would allow for the construction.

We need industry (environmentally clean) in Attleboro, not more strip malls! Please - No More Strip Malls - anywhere!

I was not at the meeting, because i was not informed that this was being discussed. I am in complete opposition for this development. And how can you be so sure that the jobs will be from the area. These companies are corporate, and will higher the most qualified. Simply because they live in the area, does not mean they are the most qualified. I ask everyone to consider how the extreme blasting will affect the neighboring houses that abut this huge ledge. When the blasting occurred across the street the residents on may street were affected, and now the blasting will be right next to the residents, for 45 continuous days. The trucks going up and down our street day in and out. I will be there at every meeting that this proposal is discussed.

@shee G - industry and not more retail/service stores are what we need to help out with more dollars to the city. An Improving economy will create a need for more jobs. Someone tell us how many vacant store fronts exist along Rt 1 at this time?

Mr. Hopkins The city already has a 2.1 million dollar slush fund. What is 100,000 extra dollars going to do that's not already being done with the 2.1 million extra dollars that is already in existence?

Mr Teller - I'm missing something here! What does this money have to do with? The strip mall is just a bunch of retail shops. I say we do not need anymore there or elsewhere in the city. As for industry/non-retail biz, we have the industrial park to fill. I di not mean to use the land near May St. How about making a green space park of sorts?
