Buckley Qualifies for Seekonk Selectmen Race

This will be the town native's second attempt in less than a year to win a seat on Seekonk's top governing board.

There are two official candidates as of Monday afternoon in the contest for one Seekonk Board of Selectmen seat, and there will likely be a third candidate in the race by the middle of the week.

Seekonk native and Board of Assessors member Paul Buckley qualified for the ballot late last week when Town Clerk Jan Parker confirmed his candidacy papers included signatures from at least 50 local residents. Buckley was also a candidate in the September special election for one selectmen seat. He lost in a close contest to Nelson Almeida .

"This is a different race," Buckley told Seekonk Patch last month. "I think there's some momentum for me and I want to continue with it. I want to see if I can win in a different type of atmosphere."

Incumbent Francis Cavaco, who has been on the board since 2008, qualified for the ballot several weeks ago and announced his intention to run in October.

"I have work to do for the town that I have not completed," said Cavaco told Patch in October. "There are still things that need to get done in this town, and the fixes can't always be done quickly."

Former Selectman Mike Brady said he would submit his papers Tuesday. He pulled papers in late December, but has waited to return them because municipal rules prevent him from being a candidate and remain on the Finance Committee. He wanted to attend as many finance meetings as possible prior to the submittal deadline, which is next Monday.

Michael DelRosso, whose grandfather is a former selectman, pulled papers in November. Town Hall observers do not expect him to return them.

Cavaco's seat is the only selectmen position being contested on Election Day, which is April 1. The ballot will also include elections for school committee, planning board, water commission, library board and board of assessors.

I think it's time to give Paul Buckley a chance, he will get my vote at the one and only Seekonk High School polling center on All Fools' day.

I am uncommitted as to whether or not I will bother to vote in the Selectman's race. If I do, I will probably vote for Mr Buckley. I don't know how much "momentum" he has from the prior campaign. I think it will depend on how much time and energy he is willing to put into the race as compared to Brady. And there is the big "?" regarding DelRosso. A three or four man race could mean a big April Fools day surprise. Maybe 3 more years for the incumbent?

"Maybe 3 more years for the incumbent?" That is often the result of many candidates in a race. As I remember that's how Lincoln Chaffee got to be governor of RI with a third of the vote. But I digress. It will pretty much come down to who gets the most votes: Cavaco or Brady. Since about 10% of the electorate will show up on April Fool's Day, the numbers will be low.

A thought just occurred to me. Your theory is that this has always been a north/south town. Right now we have 3 members of this dysfunctional board who reside in the north. Maybe this will work in Brady's favor. The Banner fire station fiasco might also be a plus for Brady. Maybe the south will come out in force to support Brady. I won't vote for him, but I predict Brady will win.

I agree. But I think that north/south thing will play a role. That is if Brady still lives south.
Amy February 05, 2013 at 02:45 PM
You'd never know 3 of the Selectmen live in the North end. Most people won't drive all the way across town to vote in the one polling place. Too bad.

My humble opinion... Brady is well known to those who follow town politics wherever they live. He's chairman of the Finance Committee. He's articulate, savy and fair. Right now, we have so many big-ticket items in the works with the potential of cost overruns, it's scary. I don't think this is the time for a popularity contest. My strategy would be to put in Brady this year while he's willing to run, and next year replace McLintock with Buckley, if he's willing to run. I certainly have no problem with Paul Buckley.

Can people fill out absentee ballots?
Tony George February 05, 2013 at 05:13 PM
Who is Paul Buckley and what qualifies him to be elected to the Board of Selectmen other than living in South part of town?
Amy February 05, 2013 at 05:34 PM
Tony, Anyone who’s willing to take the time to run, put up with constant criticism and do what they think is best for this town I’d say is qualified. Whether you agree or disagree with them. It can’t be easy. Buckley has never been on the board and I like that he’ll bring a fresh perspective. Brady has served before and has experience. Whoever doesn’t win this time I hope will run in the next election.

Does he live in the south end? I didn't know that. I thought he more towards the north. As for qualifications, he is a resident and over 18.

Emcee: We don't have a problem with Buckley. But I guess Mr Brady does? Or maybe he believes Buckley can't possibly win against Cavaco. If that's the case, I suppose it is a good thing he threw his hat in the ring. I would have liked to see Mr Brady stay on the finance committee and find a like-minded individual with enough town government experience who he could throw his political capital behind. If not Buckley, then someone else.

Fran: The Secretary of States office lists the requirements for absentee ballots. But check with the clerk. She seems to have a different interpretation of the law.
Emcee of Seekonk February 05, 2013 at 08:08 PM
Of course Brady is going to promote his own candidacy. He would like to see Cavaco move on, but then so do Buckley and DelRosso, apparently. For me, it's a tossup between Brady and Buckley as far as qualifications are concerned. However, I believe Brady would best handle/interact with the remaining characters on a board that has no shortage of egos. Maybe I'm giving him too much credit.

All 3 of the candidates (I am excluding Mr. DelRosso as he appears not to be running) have have extensive experience of town involvement.
Joe February 06, 2013 at 02:47 AM
He does NOT live in the south end of town. He lives closer to the north end. (Close enough to be considered north end.) Cavaco and Buckley are almost one in the same. In Spite of that the people have to get out and VOTE. If you don't vote then don't complain.
Tina Tinley February 06, 2013 at 03:45 PM
I will stand behind Brady. I love his no nonsense approach to things. He is a critical thinker and not affraid to say whats on his mind. We need that fresh approach to the stuffiness we have going on. Young blood is needed. I am tired of the games played. I hope people remember how brady stood up in both positions for what he believed in. You got my vote.
deb of see-attleboro February 06, 2013 at 08:34 PM
Tina: What would you say were Mr Brady's accomplishments during the six years he served? Here is what I recall. He was on the board that unanimously supported the override of 2006. He enthusiastically supported Greenbriar. He also "retired" Thorn Mead and helped to recruit Paul Lemont. These are just a few and I could be mistaken on all three. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. The man has a record and I can be swayed. Why should I consider giving Mr Brady another three years?
