Board of Assessors Could See Raise in Stipends

The members of the Board of Assessors could see a raise in their stipend next year.

Members of the Board of Assessors could be seeing a raise in their stipends in the upcoming year.

The members could see their stipend grow from $6,500 to $8,700.

The $8,700 amount would be a return to a previous stipend amount that was previously lowered two years ago.

Chairman Dave Parker said the stipend was lower to bring the number in line with the stipends given to members of other boards. Additionally, the lowering came in a year with a tight budget.

The raises were proposed by the assessors in their submitted budget for next year, however the raises were initially rejected by Town Administrator Pamela Nolan.

Selectmen Bob McClintock suggested reinstating the higher amount, saying the lower stipend “sends the wrong message” and credited the assessors with bringing in the majority of revenue to the town.

“We should reinstate it to where it was if we have the money,” said McClintock.

The board voted 3-2 to reinstate the previous amount, with Parker and Jack Whelan opposed.

The raises, as well as the rest of the town’s budget still have to go to a public forum before being submitted to the Finance Committee.
