Attleboro Youth Commissioners Installed

Charlotte Kerwin, a sophomore at Attleboro High School, was chosen by her peers on the commission to head the city government's youth wing for the next year.

Attleboro's young leaders were installed Thursday night for new terms on the Attleboro Youth Commission. Hosted by City Councilor and Youth Commission Mentor Jay DiLisio, the ceremony took place in the small auditorium at . City Clerk Elizabeth Shockroo conducted the installation.

This was the first time the commissioners were installed at one ceremony dedicated to them. Previously, they had been installed individually at .

Following the ceremony, the commissioners went into a room to elect new officers. Attleboro High sophomore Charlotte Kerwin was elected chair. She had served as vice chair for the last year, while was the chair. He will remain on the commission.

Kerwin said in the next year, the commission will focus on working with local nonprofits, recruiting new members and reaching out to the public.

Tellier praised the commission's successes from the past year, which included raising $5,000 at the Warming Attleboro Fundraiser, with the proceeds going to Attleboro Energy Fund and HEAT, which assist those in need with heating their homes. Also, the commission raised $3,000 toward funding the city's Fourth of July fireworks display.

The other elected officers for 2012-13 were Vice Chair Harry Walsh (sophomore, Attleboro High), Treasurer David Austin (sophomore, Attleboro High), Secretary Carrie Kirby (sophomore, home-schooled), Secretary Hadley Porreca (grade 7 ).

Also installed as commissioners were John Kirby (senior, home-schooled) Nijal Popat (senior, charter school), Adam Tellier (sophomore, ), Nate O'Connor (grade 8, Foxborough Regional Charter), Carlee Russel (sophomore, Attleboro High), Avi Nerenberg (sophomore, Attleboro High), Ethan Hurd (sophomore, Attleboro High), Natalie Canaday (grade 6, ) and Eryk White ().
