Attleboro Woman Awarded for Work with People with Disabilities

Kimberly Champagne was recently honored by Gov. Deval Patrick for her social service work.

A young adult from South Attleboro was recognized by Gov. Deval Patrick's administration during a special ceremony held at the Massachusetts State House Thursday.

Kimberly Champagne, 21, along with 200 interns, was honored by members of the Department of Developmental Services’ Urban Youth Collaborative Program for her assistance in the care of individuals with developmental disabilities.

For two decades, the Urban Youth Collaborative Program has introduced young adults to the field of human services in an effort to create a future workforce and reduce the stigma often associated with developmental disabilities.

"I was speechless and so honored to be recognized because it relates directly to how I feel about the program," Champagne said. "I do love the population of people that I worked directly with.

"It's taught me a lot about myself and my goals and I also learned a lot of little lessons–it's been a humbling experience," she added.

“I'm very proud of the Urban Youth Collaborative Program and its impact on both the student interns who participate, and the individuals served,” Gov. Deval Patrick said. “As these young people complete their internships, we hope that they will carry with them a passion for service and will consider pursuing careers in this important field.”

Champagne was one of four interns who received the special Current Service Award for her work at state-operated programs and developmental centers throughout the summer.

The Captain Courtois Drive resident has been with SRS for two years and has contributed to the program by demonstrating respect for all people, patience and a acceptance of people’s differences.

"Although Kimberly is young, she has shown great maturity and responsibility in this role," Program Manager Gerry Scott said. "Her enthusiasm and love of what she does acts as a catalyst for other people to become engaged."
