Attleboro City Councilor Steps Down as Youth Commission Mentor

Councilor Brian Kirby has stepped down as mentor.

Attleboro City Councilor Brian Kirby has stepped down as mentor of the Attleboro Youth Commission, a group of students ages 11 to 18 who have an interest in government.

Kirby's commitment, including his role as at-large city councilor, have forced him to step down from his mentoring, a job that was informally handed down to him by Attleboro Budget and Administration Director Barry LaCasse.

At Tuesday night's Attleboro City Council meeting, state Rep. George Ross provided Kirby with a certificate for all of his work with the commission, and Andrew Meehan, chairman of the commission, thanked Kirby for his dedication to the group of youths and their mission.

"He has always been, I think, the epitome of dependability," Meehan said. "I can't say enough Mr. Kirby, thank you for being our mentor, teaching us about government and thank you for leading us."

While it has not yet been made official, City Councilor Shannon Heagney has expressed interest in continuing her role with advising the commission as mentor.
