Almeida Pulls Papers for Selectmen Run

For the second time this year, Nelson Almeida will run for a seat on the Seekonk Board of Selectmen. The Parks and Recreation Committee member picked up nomination papers from the Town Clerk's office Thursday morning for the Sept. 24 special election to fill the seat . This was the opening day of the nomination period 

Almeida impressed many political observers in April of the five candidates in the contest for two selectmen seats. Dave Parker and Gary Sagar won seats in that election.

"The first time around I missed out, but not by much," wrote Almeida in an email to Attleboro-Seekonk Patch. "I've contacted Mr. Rice to make sure he was not going to run again, and he stated no. So here I am again trying for a second time. The supporters of my last campaign are extremely happy that I'm trying again."

Almeida has lived in Seekonk for five years. He owns a heating business and has two daughters. A regular attendee of selectmen meetings, Almeida often addresses the board during the Community Speaks session. He was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Committee last month.

Almeida has until Aug. 6 to return the nomination papers with the signatures of at least 50 registered Seekonk voters.

Nobody else pulled papers on Thursday, but local cable talk show host Jeffrey Starr Mararian contacted the clerk's office to say he wanted to be a write-in candidate, Assistant Town Clerk Karen McHugh told Patch.
