Townwide Power Outages Reported, Downed Trees Block Roads

Police officers are patrolling the town.

Strong winds are downing large trees throughout town, cutting off power supplies and creating roadblocks.

According to Fire Chief Alan Jack, Hurricane Irene is "wreaking havoc" for Department of Public Works employees and rescue personnel. Residents have reported trees falling on houses, small smoke fires and impassible roads.

According to dispatch, electricity is cut off all across town. Stop lights at Arcade Avenue and other intersections have been spotty in their functionality.

Making matters worse, police and fire departments have been experiencing glitches with their own communications devices.

"We're having problems," he said.

Battery power has been utilized as a plan B.

But that hasn't stopped some from venturing out. Drivers are out, including those looking to get in their daily job. One runner was dressed for the weather on Jacob Street. A police officer told him to be careful since a fallen tree was suspended by telephone wires across the roadway.

Department of Public Works employees are out removing debris from roads. 

"We're working together As soon as we open a road, another one closes," the chief said "[Residents should be in their houses.]"
