VIDEO: Seekonk Firefighters Take a Bit Off the Top for Charity

Members of the Seekonk Fire Department raised just under $4,000 to fundraise for childhood cancer cures.

Ready, set, shave. Members of the Seekonk Fire Department took part in the St. Baldrick's fundraiser, which was celebrated with a hair-shaving event Wednesday night at McFadden’s in Providence.

The loss of hair is a paltry sacrifice in the quest to find cures for childhood cancers, say firefighters.

Seekonk member Evan Akers was already coiffed by the time the event started at about 6 p.m. The day before, he lost his blonde scruff for all to see on the Rhode Show.

“I’m used to it,” he said, when asked if he was feeling colder. “We’re just trying to raise as much [money] as possible.”

Firefighters Adam Dalessio, Adam Clement and Jeff Magill were also in attendance. Bristol firefighter Tim Greves made a cameo as well. The fundraiser was especially dear to his heart. He lost his mother to cancer as a child.

At the conclusion of the event, the department raised a total of $3,395 for the non-profit.

The East Providence Fire Department raised $204 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which raises money to find cures for childhood cancers.

Rob Pray, an East Providence firefighter, said his shave "tickled."

"I expected it to hurt," he said. "I was expected 1,000 little bees, but it tickled.”
