Police Log: Woman Wins Fake $50 Bingo Bill, Vandal Draws Swastika

A log of incidents by the Attleboro Police between March 20 and April 4.

Attleboro Police investigated numerous incidents in the past week, ranging from a fake $50 bill at Bingo, to angry neighbors, fake chimney sweep callers, stolen car parts and swastikas at a bar.

A counterfeit bill at Bingo

While working a Bingo detail at Attleboro Lodge of Elks on Sunday, April 3, Lt. Scott Killough was made aware of a counterfeit $50 bill used during a Bingo game. The bill was received by the Elks on March 27 from an unknown patron and paid out to a Pawtucket woman who won a Bingo game. The woman attempted to make a purchase at Walgreen's on Goff Avenue in Pawtucket and was told the bill was a fake. Bank of America in Central Falls confirmed what the Walgreen's clerk told the woman. Police seized the fake $50 bill and advised the Elks to use an authentication pen to verify currency.

Movers and movee disagree

An agreement between a resident of Commonwealth Avenue and a moving company he found on Craigslist went sour on Saturday, April 2, when the resident and movers disputed the price to move the resident from Attleboro to Framingham. Since there was no written contract and it was a case of he said, she said, Officer Rogers informed the resident that if he wanted to recover $200 he had allegedly given to the movers he would have to file a lawsuit in civil court.

Vandal smashes car window

At 8 a.m. on Saturday, Officer Fahey was dispatched to 517 Highland Ave. to investigate reports of malicious damage to a car. The owner said the back window of his Dodge Durango was shattered. Police noticed a large rock on the front passenger seat.

Resident reports ongoing harassment

At 10:49 a.m. on Saturday, Officer Bailey received a report by a Forest Street resident of malicious damage. The resident said he had been the victim of several malicious incidents over two months, including having gas siphoned out of his car on two occasions, items stolen from the car and a scratch from the front of his car the the rear of his car. Officer Bailey issued a department-wide bulletin requesting extra patrols in the Forest Street area.

Sweepstakes or scam?

At 7:22 p.m. on Friday, April 1, Officer Ryan reported to Steeple Chase Circle to investigate a report of a suspicious caller. The resident told Ryan that a woman named Lisa Fisher had called claiming to be from Publisher's Clearing House. The woman allegedly told the resident that she had won $360,000. The resident told the caller she had not entered any sweepstakes, but was ignored. The caller went on to ask the resident if she would be home the following day between 9 and 11 a.m. to receive her prize. The resident was instructed to contact police if anyone arrived in the morning. The incident was referred to Det. Paul Berard.

Evicted neighbor loses his cool

At 6:30 p.m. on, Thursday, March 31, Attleboro police officers Graney and Monterroso were dispatched to Creative Images on Pleasant Street for a report of a disturbance. The owner told police that a resident in an apartment adjacent to the salon entered the business and called her a [expletive] and an [expletive] sucker. The resident also allegedly told the owner, "this has been my home for four years" and "I'll take care of you." Police made contact with the resident who admitted to police that he was "out of line" and that he was upset after hearing he was being evicted since he no longer smokes marijuana in the house.

Chimney sweeper offering services

Officer Kafel reported to Patterson Avenue on Wednesday, March 30, to investigate a possible phone scam. The resident told police that she had received several phone calls over the past three months from a male who claimed to be a chimney sweeper. Officer Kafel was dispatched to Irving Avenue for a similar incident involving a chimney sweeper offering his services. The Caller ID showed the same number that was identified at the Patterson Avenue residence.

Pub 'tagged' by vandal

Police responded to Junior's Pub (JR's) at 147 Pine St. on Tuesday, March 29, for reports of property damage. Patrolman Macneil noticed the front and side doors to the pub had been vandalized with a magic marker. The tagging appeared to depict male genitalia and Nazi swastikas and were made sometime after closing, according to police. The matter is still under investigation.

Theft at the train parking lot

Officer Daday responded to the MBTA in uptown Attleboro after a North Attleboro resident reported that the catalytic converter of his car had been removed while it was parked in the MBTA parking lot. Police plan to follow up with Stateline Scrap to see if a suspects scrapped the converter. 

Thief grabs $5 gas can

Attleboro Police Officer Morrison was dispatched to County Street on Monday, March 28, after the site manager of the Aetna Bridge said a storage container belonging to Case was broken into and a $5 gas container was stolen. The site manager told police the thief was probably looking for copper wire to sell at a scarp yard.

Car parts stolen

Car parts valued at $1,200, including a car door, tires and several tire rims were astolen from East Coast Collision on Rice Street in Attleboro.

An old fight over old leaves

On Sunday, March 27, Officer Jon Hardy responded to a dispute between two residents on Bridge Street over leaves in the yard. Police say the two neighbors have an ongoing dispute. 

Car window smashed

Attleboro Police Officer Williams was dispatched to Bank Street on Friday, March 26, for a report of malicious damage to a car. The driver's side window of the Bank Street resident's car was smashed. The resident said he suspected a former roommate,  who had recently harassed him, as the person who smashed his window, but did not have any proof. The suspect is known by the Attleboro PD. 

Woman suspects daughter of slashing car tires

At 7 a.m. on Friday, March 26, Officer Fontaine received a report of malicious damage to a car. Fontaine responded to Oakland Avenue and spoke with the resident, who said between midnight and 7 a.m. someone had slashed all four of her tires. The resident told police she suspected it was her daughter who did the slashing. 

Dirt bike stolen

On March 26 at 9:14 a.m., Officer Baily reported to Commonwealth Avenue for reports of a stolen dirt bike. The bike, which is black and orange and has a sketch of a fox and skull and crossbones on the fenders, was taken from the rear patio of the apartment.

Attempted break-in

 At 7:22 p.m. on March 26, Officer Enegren was dispatched to South Main Street for reports of an attempted breaking and entering. Enegren spoke to the resident, who said she left her house between noon and 1 p.m. and noticed pry marks on the rear door when she arrived home. Police talked with neighbors, who reported seeing nothing out of the ordinary.

Garage is paintball target

Attleboro K-9 Officer Bussiere responded to Read Street on Thursday, March 25, for a report of vandalism. Police noticed a garage door had been struck by a yellow paintball. 

Traffic stop leads to warrant arrest

On Wednesday, March 24, Attleboro Police Officer Bechtel pulled over a car after noticing the car did not have any lights on. Bechtel stopped the car and spoke to the three males in the car. The three denied driving with no headlights on. One of the males, David Allard, was taken into custody for an outstanding breaking and entering warrant.

Thief grab copper and chop saw

Attleboro Police Officer Morrison responded to Park Circle on Sunday, March 21, for a report of breaking and entering of a car. The resident said 200-foot copper leads were taken from the back of his pickup truck and a 12-inch chop saw was stolen from his shed.

'Live under the influence'

Officer Larsen discovered tagging on a wall at Wamsutta Middle School. The tagged message said "live under the influence" and was written in chalk.

Copper tubing cut from home

Police responded to Deanville Road on Tuesday, March 23, for a report of stolen copper. The real estate agent for the property told Attleboro Police that she noticed copper tubing was cut from the property's water pipe.
