North Attleboro Police Help U.S. Marshals Nab a Sex Offender

A man convicted of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old in Florida has been arrested by Greenwich , CT Police for failing to register as a sex offender when he moved to Old Greenwich last month.

On May 16, with the assistance of the United States Marshal's Service and North Attleboro Police Department, Steven E. Amoling, 44,  was arrested as a fugitive without incident. According to Greenwich Police, Amoling waived his right to an extradition hearing and was being held early Wednesday on $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in state Superior Court in Stamford.

According to a statement released Wednesday by , Amoling, whose last known address was 26 Nimitz Place, Old Greenwich, lived in Florida and notified the Florida Department Law Enforcement on April 13 that he was permanently relocating to Greenwich.

Under Connecticut law, an offender has five business days from the date of arrival in CT to register (in person) as a sex offender with the CT Sex Offender Registry Unit (SORU), police said.  Greenwich detectives were monitoring Amoling from the moment of his arrival, and after Amoling failed to register within the statutory timeframe, obtained a warrant for his arrest, according to the press release.

Amoling subsequently fled the Greenwich area, police said,without notifying either the FDLE or SORU of his new intended address. 

Amoling is required to register as a sex offender as a result of a 2007 Florida conviction for 'Lewd and Lascivious Molestation of a Victim 12 Years of Age.'

Requests for further information were left with Greenwich Police early Wednesday.
