Gas Leak Forces Attleboro Evacuation

A high-pressure main was struck due to an incorrect marking of where the main is, a fire official says.

Residents of 20 Attleboro homes on Steere Street were forced to evacuate Friday morning when Verizon workers mistakenly ruptured a four-inch high-pressure gas line.

Fire Capt. John Guenette said Verizon was digging in the area to set new utility poles when the rupture ocurred. The marking on the road noting where the main was supposed to be was incorrect, Guenette said.

The incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. Gas was shut off and residents were allowed to return to their homes by about 10:30 a.m., Guenette said.
