Central Falls Boy Dies in South Attleboro Pool

Matthew Torres, 4, of Central Falls died at Sturdy Memorial Hospital Wednesday after Attleboro police and emergency officials tended to him after an apparent drowing at a residential, in-ground pool in South Attleboro. 

The Attleboro Police Department received a 911 call reporting a possible drowning at 33 Boardman Lane in South Attleboro Wednesday evening. 

Attleboro Police Officer Kevin Blackwell found the young boy in the back yard of the residence.

"Several persons were also present and several were attempting to administer first aid to the boy," Attleboro Det. Sgt. Art Brillon said in a release. "Officer Blackwell began lifesaving efforts and was quickly assisted by Lt. James Keane."

The officers began CPR and waited for the Attleboro Fire Department personnel to take over.

The 4-year-old boy was immediately transported to Sturdy by fire department paramedics. 

"Even though heroic efforts were made by police and fire department personnel and Sturdy Memorial Hospital staff, the boy was pronounced deceased at 5:38 pm," Brillon said. 

Attleboro detectives and Massachusetts State Police detectives from the Bristol County District Attorney’s office went to the home to investigate what happened.

A dozen adults and children were interviewed about the incident. The Department of Children and Families was notified of the death, as was the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.      

Police say the incident is still under investigation by the Attleboro Police Department and Bristol County Detectives under the direction of Assistant District Attorney Steven Butts.  

Attleboro Acting Police Chief Kyle Heagney offered his condolences to the family who have lost a child.
