Banked Robbed in Seekonk

The reported robbery took place Friday morning at the Citizens Bank in the Stop & Shop on Highland Avenue.

Various sources reported a Friday morning bank robbery at the Citizens Bank in the Stop & Shop on Highland Avenue in Seekonk, not far from the East Providence border. The robbery took place during the 11 a.m. hour, sources say.

FOX Providence reported:

Initial reports claim the suspect passed a note to the teller, claiming he had a weapon, but no weapon was shown.

The suspect is said to be a white male, about 5’7-5’8 tall, wearing a camouflage shirt, and a baseball cap with a wig under it.

Capt. Craig Mace, the Seekonk Police Department's information officer, wrote Friday afternoon in an email responding to Seekonk Patch's request for information about the incident that he did "not yet" have any information and "will put it out when possible."

An armed guard would have prevented this. Citizens and Stop & Shop can afford to go halfs on a guard. Why make it so easy for this to happen? How many managers does it take for both places to realize that a guard is needed? This was in broad daylight, stop being so cheap an hire some security!

A bank might think it is cost effective just to let themselves be robbed. How much money is in the cash drawer at any time? How much would it cost to hire a full-time security guard for every branch? I'm thinking banks are insured against thefts and it might be up to the insurance companies who have all those sharp pencils to insist on a guard. So far, apparently, that hasn't happened. Until someone becomes collateral damage, it will be left to the local police to gather the evidence and wait... for the thief to make a mistake. And thieves are like mosquitoes, you kill one and ten others fly in to fill the void.

I am pretty shocked at a bank robbery inside a busy grocery store on a Friday with so many witnesses around, both inside the store and outside in the parking lot. Not very easy to get out of that lot onto Rt. 6 for a quick getaway either. That is a very bold or very desperate robber.

I agree 100%. And it seems, at this point, a robber would be easy to spot with the hat and the wig routine. Sometimes dark glasses. They are bold and they are desperate and somebody is going to get hurt.

Maybe grocery stores aren't the best place for full-service banks. ATMs, yes. Tellers, no. If Stop & Shop doesn't insist on greater security at Citizens, the supermarket will lose customers. Who wants to shop at a supermarket where the bank inside is targetted? At the K-Mart plaza in South Attleboro, the bank was next door to the supermarket. Perhaps this is a better model.
