Attleboro Y Partners With Police For YMCA D.A.R.E. Camp

In collaboration with the police departments of Attleboro, Norton, and North Attleboro, the Attleboro YMCA will offer the 4th annual YMCA D.A.R.E. Camp at Camp Finberg the week of July 15-19.

Designed for youth entering fifth and sixth grade, D.A.R.E. Camp offers all the fun of a regular camp day, including recreational swimming, ropes course challenges, sports, games – while also paying particular focus on developing respect, teamwork, and self-confidence.

Staffed by community D.A.R.E. police officers, YMCA staff, and high school volunteers, D.A.R.E. Camp complements the D.A.R.E. curriculum offered in the Attleboro, Norton, and North Attleboro school system. D.A.R.E. Camp provides campers with the tools they need to avoid negative influences and to rise above negative peer pressure to make smart choices when it comes to healthy choices, substance abuse, bullying, and online safety.

“One of the best outcomes of D.A.R.E. Camp is the connection that develops between the campers and the police officers,” said Meghan Hamilton, branch executive director of the Attleboro Y’s Pleasant Street Branch. “While they’re playing soccer or supporting each other on the ropes course, the kids get to know the D.A.R.E. officers on a different level. They’re not just police officers – they’re caring adults who truly care about their well-being.”

This summer, the D.A.R.E. Camp team will include juvenile detective Matt Cook from Attleboro, patrolman Charles Turcotte from Norton, and officer Pam Brown from North Attleboro. Attleboro YMCA youth wellness coordinator Ed Poirier is also part of the team to provide an emphasis on physical activity, nutrition, and healthy choices.
