Attleboro Students to Learn a Lesson in Fire Safety

Attleboro receives fire safety and prevention funds from the state.

Students in Attleboro will soon learn all they need to know about fire safety and prevention, thanks to an infusion of funds from the state. 

The received nearly $6,400 from the Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) grant program, Senator Richard Ross (R-Wrentham) and Representatives Elizabeth Poirier (R-North Attleboro) and George Ross (R-Attleboro) announced Monday evening. The SAFE grants, which are used to help educate people about fire safety and prevention, are given out by the Office of Public Safety and Security Department of Fire Services.

Attleboro Fire Chief Scott Lachance said he was notified of the grant Monday. "We utilize this funding to help provide our continuing public education programs to teach children about fire safety and prevention and to visit schools throughout the year," he said. "This funding helps us to provide education within the school’s throughout much of the year."

The safety and prevention program is a collaborative effort with the schools, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the members of the Attleboro Fire Department, according to Lachance. "The Attleboro Fire Department is committed to continuing this partnership to keep our community safe. Dr. Durkin and all the school department have always been very supportive of this program and we look forward to many years of continued teamwork."

The program in conjunction with additional safety initiatives has helped lead Massachusetts to an all time record low fire deaths in 2010, according to the state.

“The S.A.F.E. program gives our children the tools and education they need to react in a dangerous situation,” Rep. George Ross said. “I am grateful Attleboro is a recipient of funds through this critically important program.”

The Attleboro Municipal Council must first authorize the Fire Department to use the funds.
