The website attleboropolice.org has been updated and replaced with a new design format.

"It was time to redesign our websites look and feel and make some much needed additions," said Chief Kyle Heagney.

The new website includes an option for language translation, crash reports, social media links, safety tips, contact lists and in the near future, weekly crime logs have been added.

"We have a diverse group of citizens in our city and the language translator will assist the public in translating the website into any language for them," Heagney said.

New smartphone app

The police department has also ventured into the smartphone app world. The application can be downloaded for free by searching for "My Police Department" or "MyPD" in the iPhone and Android marketplaces.

The app is packed with ways to contact the Attleboro police and send information to the department. It includes features for checking on the latest news, social media postings, directions, department contacts, submitting feedback & questions, department surveys, submitting crime tips, speeding complaints, and more. The free app does not feature any advertisements or pop ups.

"Our goal is to increase the flow of information, allowing users to easily send us messages or questions and also providing them with our informational updates and services in one easy to use app," Heagney said. "I think it is important to take advantage of the smart phone technology. It seems everybody is using these phones now. It is a wonderful way to enhance our communication with the public. I am simply amazed at the digital resources available with these smart phone applications. It is important to capitalize on the latest technology.”

Users also have the option to view other area police departments on MyPD by choosing the applicable department. The app defaults to the last agency viewed upon opening, this makes it easy to always open right to the Attleboro Police Department.

"This app was built on the premise of law enforcement agencies sharing one unique platform to make it extremely affordable and more powerful," said Sarah Grant, spokeswoman for Wired Blue, which makes the app. "It allows police departments and other law enforcement agencies to have their own custom app while sharing resources with other departments. This saves the agency money and makes the app more useful and unique by allowing the user to change to another city they might be working in, visiting or driving through."

The department home screen contains a number of features with more available in the bottom menu, which activates upon touch or swipe. Some features, the survey icon for example, will only appear on the app when a survey is currently being conducted.

Attleboro PD gets social

The department is launching Facebook and twitter pages.

"The Attleboro Police Twitter and Facebook pages will be utilized to better push information out to the community and increase citizen information with the department," Heagney said. "This is a very helpful communication tool to advise the public about specific events or emergencies."

The pages integrate with the new police app and website. Residents are encouraged to join the department pages to receive relevant new and information.

The pages can be found at facebook.com/attleboropolice and twitter.com/attleboropolice.
