Attleboro Police Plan Underage Alcohol Stings

Funding for the operations comes from a state grant.

Minors who purchase or attempt to purchase alcohol and those willing to sell it to them could be in serious trouble. The Attleboro Police Department is planning to do a series of stings after receiving a $9,990 grant from the state's Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

During the operations, underage operatives will attempt to purchase alcoholic beverages from licensed sellers, according to a press release from Detective Sgt. Arthur Brillon. In addition, the department will do enforcement to identify underage people who buy or attempt to buy alcohol as well as those who buy alcohol for individuals under 21.

"The Attleboro Police Department recognizes the need to monitor and educate all alcoholic beverage license holders regarding the dangers of underage drinking," Brillon wrote. "All alcoholic beverage license holders are reminded to be vigilant in verifying age with proper identification prior to selling alcoholic beverages."

He continued, "Likewise, an effective underage drinking prevention strategy must also consist of operations targeted at youth access to alcohol in the community. Through consistent enforcement and education, alcohol retailers will understand the importance of routinely and properly verifying age of those seeking purchase of alcoholic beverages."

Alcohol is a principle factor in the three leading causes of death among young people—suicide, homicide and unintentional injuries, wrote Brillon, who cited the Centers for Disease Control. Also, Brillon wrote, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show 33 percent of people ages 15 to 20 in the United States who died in vehicle crashes in 2009 had a blood-alcohol level of .01 percent or higher.
