Attleboro Police: Buckle up or Get a Ticket

Before you start driving or riding in a vehicle, make sure to put on your seat belt. Not only is it the safe thing to do, but also failing to buckle up could get the driver and everybody else in the car or truck a ticket.

The  and numerous other agencies throughout the state are participating in the Click It or Ticket program, which includes increased enforcement of the legal requirement to use a seat belt. If a vehicle is pulled over, everybody inside not wearing a seat belt could get a ticket, according to a press release from Attleboro police.

"Injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes cost taxpayers and businesses hundreds of millions of dollars every year," Attleboro Police Chief Kyle Heagney said. "We can help reduce those costs by making sure people buckle up, every trip, every time."

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration figures show that nearly half the people killed in Massachusetts' vehicle crashes in 2010 were not wearing seat belts, according to the release.

"A lot of people shrug off the statistics because they see themselves as good drivers," Heagney said. "But they forget that they can get hurt because of other reckless drivers. Your best defense is to buckle up."

The program will take place through June 3.
