Attleboro Man Loses $800 in Reported Scam

The scam happened in Braintree.

A 50-year-old Attleboro man was defrauded of $800 last week after he fell victim to a scam at the South Shore Plaza in Braintree, local Police Chief Russell Jenkins said in a statement.

A man claiming to be the victim's UPS delivery driver told him his brother-in-law "Henry" worked at Sears and had 65-inch LED TVs for sale at a discounted price, Jenkins said. In the parking lot outside Sears, "Henry" took the money from the Attleboro man and gave him a fake receipt. He never returned.

"Residents should also be aware of another scam in which a caller claims to be a jury duty coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the caller asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Giving out any of this information will compromise your identity.

"This scam has been reported so far in eleven states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, Colorado, Arizona and Oregon. This scam is particularly insidious because they use intimidation to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system."
