Rep Paul Heroux Encourages Students to Enter Art Competition and Win College Savings Money

I am pleased to announce students in grades kindergarten to 5 in the Second Bristol District are eligible to enter MEFA’s 10th annual College Savings Art Competition and win up to $5,000 for college.  The contest, which awards U.Fund College Investing Plan accounts as prizes, asks Massachusetts students to submit artwork depicting “What do I want to be when I graduate from college?”

I encourage students in Attleboro to enter this competition and have a chance to win money for college.  It’s important that we encourage future generations to strive to attend college and that we help families with resources for saving and paying for higher education such as the U.Fund College Investing Plan.

The art competition is open to all Massachusetts students in grades kindergarten to 5 attending a public, private, charter or home-based school. Nine winners will be selected to receive three first-place prizes of $5,000 in a U.Fund College Investing Plan account; three second-place prizes of $2,000 in a U.Fund account and three third-place prizes of $1,000 in a U.Fund account.

The Art Competition is sponsored by the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA), with support from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. In the past nine years, MEFA’s College Savings Art Competition has received about 20,000 entries and awarded more than $200,000 in U.Fund accounts.

MEFA is the Commonwealth’s non-profit authority for families seeking guidance on saving, planning and paying for college and offers the U.Fund College Investing Plan, a tax-advantaged way to save for college expenses that provides flexible savings options managed by Fidelity Investments.

Deadline

The deadline for submitting artwork to MEFA is December 31, 2013.  Winners will be announced in the spring of 2014.  Information about the competition has been distributed to superintendents and principals across the Commonwealth, and MEFA has asked school districts to send competition information home to parents in student backpacks or via virtual backpacks.
