Editors' Picks: Favorite Movies of 2012

Editor's Note: The following is part of a special "end-of-the-year" series in which local editors from your nearby Patch towns highlight their favorites in various topics.  

What was your favorite movie from 2012?

"The Dark Knight Rises" was my favorite movie of 2012. I love all three movies in the trilogy, and while the "Dark Knight" was my favorite of the three, "Dark Knight Rises" was a close second. It was action packed and Bane was a great villain.

"Seven Psychopaths." There were a lot of great movies this year, and they all catered to a specific demographic/genre. "Twilight" was for hopeless romantics, "The Avengers" was for geeks, "Lincoln" was for history buffs and "Les Miserables" was for theater people. I have to say my favorite was "Seven Psychopaths." It was written by the same guy who did "In Bruges," Martin McDonagh, and if you haven't seen that and you're a fan of dark comedy, you totally should. I won't lie, it has some of my favorite actors in it, but it's a thoughtful, action-filled romp through some of the darker aspects of humanity. Chris Walken was amazing as well.

The best movie I saw this year was "Moonrise Kingdom." Perhaps the best movie from Wes Anderson, it was an interesting tale of two children trying to escape their island home from the adults who are really not living nor are they happy.

"Wreck it Ralph" was probably my favorite movie of 2012. It's the perfect film for video game nerds as it has cameos old and new.

It might not be the biggest film of 2012, but definitely one of the biggest for me (nerd that I am): "Skyfall." The latest James Bond flick is absolutely my favorite of the last three – those starring Daniel Craig as 007 – and it returns to some of the “old school” Bond film characteristics that fans expect. The theme song, sung by Adele, is also a big hit. Overall, it's definitely worth seeing for Bond nerds like me, or really any movie-lover.

"The Dark Knight Rises." This was one of the most highly anticipated films of 2012 and it did not disappoint. I thought it was a terrific conclusion to what has turned out to be one of my favorite trilogies of all time. If you have not seen this film, I highly recommend it as it will entertain even the most casual of super hero fans.

Like books, I don't keep up with the latest movies. I'm sure this time next year I'll be ranting and raving about how good "Lincoln" was. By far the funniest movie I saw this year was "Ted." As a Massachusetts native and a huge fan of "Family Guy," that was a movie I wasn't going to miss out on. Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane were fantastic. Wahlberg is proving he can be good in comedies in addition to action and drama.

Thoroughly enjoyed "Ted," which while not Oscar worthy, was a laugh-a-minute comedy directed, produced and starring Seth MacFarlane of "Family Guy" fame and Marky Mark, Mark Wahlberg. Beyond the Rated-R humor, it was a touching story of a grownup kid at heart and his favorite childhood toy/best friend.

"Searching for Sugarman" is a documentary about an obscure Detroit musician named Rodriguez who released two albums more than 40 years ago that went absolutely nowhere in the United States, despite having a sound that reminded you of Boby Dylan, James Taylor and other great artists. Oddly, his music became popular in Apartheid South Africa. While nobody in that country knew anything about this man, except that he had committed suicide, his anti-establishment music was an inspiration for a people frustrated to be living under a government that was on the wrong side of history.

I encourage you not to Google around about this movie. Just take my word for it that it's wonderful, and then find a theater that is showing it. Or wait until Jan. 23 when the film is released on DVD.
