Breaking and Entering Makes One Boy Hungry for Apples

A lesson in parenting: keep a watchful eye and tell your neighbors to lock their doors.

Watching your children is always interesting to say the least. When they are babies it's a lot simpler, when you put them down in one place they stay there. I imagine when my children are teens knowing where they are every minute of the day will be impossible. I, for one, am not looking forward endless worrying.

When my oldest was 5 years old, I had my first heart attack (so to speak). I was working on the landscaping in the front yard. My Miss Molly, 2 at the time, was taking her afternoon nap upstairs in her room. Christopher, my sweet little boy, was bouncing back and forth from the playroom to visiting me in the front yard. He hated to be alone so he would come see me every couple of minutes. He would always bring me a toy from his playroom, which I would add to a pile.

Oh where oh where did my little boy go?

I realized quickly that I hadn't seen Christopher for a little while. So off my gloves went as I walked into the open front door. I was surprised when I didn't see him in the playroom and I started calling for him as I walked from room to room. In the backyard? Nope, only Sabrina the dog was there. Sabrina never left his side, when he was out in the yard. So I was shocked to see her alone.

Panic set in really fast as I dialed the . My calm call about my little boy, turned to a high-pitched scream. The police were on their way and I headed to the neighbor's houses to ask for help. I quickly noticed the neighbor to the left wasn't home and started across the street.

Just as I went to enlist my neighborhood in a search, I heard my neighbor's door shut and my little 5 -year-old came out, shouting "What?" I quickly ran to him scooped him into my arms. I was so happy. It was hard to be mad at him, when I was so grateful to have him safe and in my arms. I called the police and called them off. Wiping away the tears, I tried to scold him.

It didn't take long for me to realize Christopher came out of a house that was empty. When I asked him what he was doing in there, he responded: "I was relaxing." Apparently life is stressful in the Brasil homestead and some much needed R and R was needed at the neighbors. So he let himself in through the unlocked side door.

Confessing to the Neighbors

I eyed the neighbors house all evening feeling I had to explain my son's visit to their home. Finally after a full day away, the neighbors came home. My neighbor was surprised to hear of the visit. After hearing me tell the tale she started to put things together. She thought it was weird that the recliner they had just purchased was fully reclined. Apparently my son did more then just relax. He let out all four of their dogs, and he also decided to feed them, apples! The family had spent the previous day apple picking and their super-sized bag of apples was almost empty. Not only were there apples in the dog dishes there were apples in shoes and beds.

After realizing how lucky I was, I decided to keep a better eye on my relaxation-seeking little boy. I also think my neighbor started locking her door.
