American As Apple Pie

Ahhh there is nothing quite like the smell of a fresh hot Apple Pie to welcome Fall! Some people have “the family recipe” while others dabble with creating new sensations, but no matter what, Apple Pies are a welcoming taste of the season.

“Good apple pies are a considerable part of our domestic happiness,” according to Mark McWilliams, author of the book, “The Story Behind the Dish.”    Some of the history behind the tradition dates back to the 1600s, when England had more than 70 varieties of apples and the Mayflower brought seeds to the colonies, which were planted in Massachusetts in 1625.  In America, Thomas Jefferson experimented with creating new apple tree varieties and by some accounts, as many as 14,000 varieties of apples appeared in the United States in the 1800s. Few of those are cultivated today.

The first known American cookbook, “American Cookery” written by Amelia Simmons in 1798, included recipes for pies using uncooked apples as well as stewed apples.  The phrase “As American as apple pie” was in use by the 1860s, leading to its place in history as an American favorite!

So now you know some history let's kick off the season with some New England tradition by visiting some of the local Apple picking places and get into the Fall spirit!  The Big Apple, Fairmount Farm and Phantom Farms are just a few of some of the great local places for Apple picking, there are plenty of others as well!
