Together We WILL Make a Difference

Hurricane Sandy relief effort

A little more than a week ago, Hurricane Sandy destroyed much of the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut shorelines. People living in these areas have been left homeless, their belongings strew throughout the area, carried away by flood waters.

As if that wasn't enough, earlier this week a wicked winter storm barreled into the coastline, knocking out power to some who had just gotten it back. Many people have been left with no heat and no electricity in freezing temperatures.

For 10 days, I've been talking with my kids about ways we, as Girl Scouts, can help others. It proved to be a bit of a challenge. We needed to find out what supplies were needed, where we could collect and store these items and finally, the biggest challenge—how we could get the supplies to those in need.

I'm pleased to say that we have been able to coordinate our desire to help with the logistical efforts of the SA Village Lions Club. The Scouts in Attleboro will be collecting and donating items to the Lions at their collection locations (details below). Our scouts will be focusing on things like school supplies, games, books and toys (new or gently used). It's heartwarming to see our great city come together to achieve a common goal.

There are many other needs though. Please find the donation locations and a list of needed items below.

 Drop-off locations will be:

* STOP & SHOP IN SOUTH ATTLEBORO — Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The final day for collections will be Nov. 16, with the truck leaving Nov. 17

ITEMS NEEDED: Gently-used warm clothing for adults and children, pajamas, socks and underwear, sneakers and rubber boots, blankets, pillows (must be new), soap and personal-care items, baby diapers, hand sanitizers, flashlights, batteries, cleaning materials, laundry detergent, bleach, rubber gloves and work gloves, shovels, brooms, pails, large sturdy trash bags, school supplies, children’s books and toys.

MORE INFO: Questions? Contact either Deb at 508-695-2185 or Janick at 508-695-2447 to display a donation box at your  business.

Thank you all in advance for your generosity and thank you VERY much to South Attleboro Village Lions Club for allowing us to join forces with you to make a difference to those in need.
