What's the calendar's best holiday? What's the most useless?
We're soon entering the last third of the year, when two-thirds of the holidays occur. So, which one is your favorite? I suppose that, for this exercise we could set aside ones with religious significance or overtones, as a sop to our agnostic / atheist friends; but I'll leave that to the majority, who no doubt will want them included "on the list" . . . and such is not a problem, in my view. I'm rather sure that Christmas will get many votes here; but, seriously, what is your favorite?
OK. MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY of the whole year is . . . . Columbus Day! Yes. It has been for a long time. The weather is usually just fine; and it's about the last decent-weather holiday before the cold sets in for at least five months. And which holiday do I find the most useless? New Year's Day . . . which is nothing but an excuse to drink adult beverages, usually by amateurs. [I don't drink: I chose not to.]
