Health Department's Flu Vaccines Cut in Half

Attleboro received 50 percent less vaccines this year.

Though there is an ample supply of flu vaccine available for the 2011/2012 flu season, the Attleboro Health Department received a 50 percent cut from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in the amount of state-supplied vaccine.

"State-supplied flu vaccine, allocated to local health departments and boards of health, is available for all children 6 months through 18 years of age," according to Attleboro Health Nurse Jacquie O'Brien. "It is only available for individuals 19 years or older who have no insurance or who are underinsured (cost of flu vaccine is not covered by their insurance)."

The and the will again offer school-based flu clinics and additional information is forthcoming, according to O'Brien.

Pharmacies that have the funds to privately purchase the vaccine, such , and and large department store chains including Wal-Mart, Target, , and physician offices are an alternative to the health department in acquiring flu vaccination, O'Brien said.
