Disabled American Veterans Prepare for 'Forget Me Not' Campaign

The DAV will be out in front of stores on Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 for its annual fundraiser.

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) will be out in front of local stores on Oct. 1 and 2 collecting donations for its annual "Forget Me Not" campaign, City Councilor Shannon Heagney said during Tuesday night's Attleboro City Council committee meeting.

DAV members first began selling the Forget-Me-Nots in 1926 to support DAV services needed by veterans who were disabled in World War I, according to the DAV. The blue flower, handed out by DAVs, signifies the spring flowers that grew on the graves of comrades killed during the First World War.

Vietnam veteran Richard Fredette, commander of Post 115 of the VFW and Chapter 91 of the Disabled Americans Veterans, asked the City Council for permission to hang a banner promoting the effort.

The DAV exists to provide support to veterans in a variety of ways. It sends out care packages to those currently serving and raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project, which provides aid to severely injured service men and women.

Veterans will be out in front of local stores as they were during last year's drive.
