Columns Come off at Capron Park

Restoration of the park's historic arched gateway is expected to take up to nine months.

There was action taking placing Monday morning at the entrance to Capron Park on County Street. The two columns that stood on each side of the once mighty arched gateway sign were removed.

Mayor Kevin Dumas told Attleboro Patch the columns will be replaced, as will the 75-year-old metal sign that was destroyed in August when it was struck by a soda truck.

"The columns have to be replaced as they are broken and split," Dumas wrote in an email. "They will not be reused to rebuild the arch. Replicas are currently being made. The metal work restoration is underway and is very complicated due to the fact that it was erected in 12 pieces."

He continued, "As stated on the [temporary entrance] sign that I had erected ... the time frame for completion is 6-9 months from August 1, 2012. We are in the beginning phase of the restoration project."
