Defining a Champion...

In a world where sportsmanship is increasingly lacking, one group of girls teaches everyone a lesson in what is really important in life.

The Seekonk Black Goose U-14 girls team has accomplished something that to my knowledge has never been done by the smallest youth soccer program in the South Coast. They completed their regular Division I season with an undefeated record.

This is an incredible achievement from a town our size and more so when you consider that the roster included players from three different teams.  This included four members from a younger team and one player two days past the age limit that was waivered to play.

There is nobody that could have predicted that this mixed group, some of whom had never played with each other, would develop into a strong team of girls that would overcome much adversity. Watching them improve with each passing week was both enjoyable and a little magical. They trusted each other and always put the team first.

The team was informed last week that because of the waiver, they would be unable to participate and represent the town in the playoffs. Having a chance to do it over again, every coach, player and parent would ask for the same waiver—even if it meant not going to the playoffs. The goal of the program is to get the girls ready for high school soccer. Ending a soccer season for a player because there was not a team in her age group was never an option.

In a reality where there is much screaming, yelling and lack of character, it is refreshing that we were able to enjoy a season in which a group of girls just wanted to play the game and have a blast doing it. They stood up for each other and taught everyone what a true champion really stands for.
