Some People Are Just Nasty!

Nasty people are all around us, but how do you handle them? Ignore the or get even?

Have you ever dealt with a really nasty person? I’m not talking about someone that has an opposite point of view. I’m talking about someone who would take an opposing point of view simply to spite you or who would not say something when he or she agreed with you out of spite. Or how about someone who has gone out of his or her way to say hurtful things about you and then won’t tell you why? Or how about the classic example in the workplace; someone with whom you have had a difference of opinion then takes it personally and decides to spend an inordinate amount of time working against you?

What do you do when you find yourself confronted with a situation that can both be unpleasant or job threatening? I’m going to use that classic answer that we all heard so much in law school, “It depends…”  It depends on several things. Is this a person who was a friend and now is an enemy? Is this a boss or a co-worker? Or is this just someone who is jealous of your position and there really isn’t anything he or she can do about it except to try to make your life miserable?

It’s difficult to imagine why anyone would spend precious time actively campaigning against anyone unless there was something serious at stake. And yet, I believe it happens more often than we would like to know. I think the best thing to do generally is…..nothing, unless the person causing trouble for you is in a position to do your life some kind of measurable damage. In that case I would take copious notes and document everything in the event that you decide to file a lawsuit and you need to produce documentation.

But in general, the best course of action is to put a smile on your face and press on in your life focusing on the positive and looking for opportunities to rise above the occasion.   The best revenge, the only meaningful revenge, in my opinion, is happiness and success in your own life. All else is illusory.

But I’d really like to throw it out there. Do you have a story of someone who really went out of his or her way to try and make life difficult for you? How did you handle it? In looking back do you wish you had done anything differently?
